All of the terracotta bricks are the same in colour.

Yet we perceive there to be colour differences because of the different brick textures and joints.

The darker bands have a rough surface, while the other bands are smooth-faced and reflect more light to appear lighter.

The mortar joints are predominantly flush, however, every 7th course has been raked, which makes the adjacent bricks appears darker when viewed from a distance.

Stretcher bonds used with soldier 'bonds' on the top and bottom courses of the smooth bricks where they meet the rough bricks.

Possibly one of the finest examples of brickwork in Sydney! Thats architecture...

The reason why i choose to take this picture is because it clearly portrays a sense of depth in the material. With a high degree of detailing in the arches and the rounded edges of the brickwork, this use of masonry has provided the building with a great degree of monumentality. The building features an English bond with raked mortar Joints.

Each of these images demonstrate a very high level of detailing in brick and show what beautiful architecture that masonry material can produce. It further shows the versatility of the material as both pliable to load bearing purposes and as highly crafted ornament. The building features English bonds and lightly ironed Motor Joints. It is clear that a high level of craftmanship has gone into the facade of this building.

Brick as an Image 2- Irina

This ia another brick building that I come across, the pattern is just a running bond, but the texture of the brick is unusual.

This one shows how bricks was used in decorating the facade of the building.

just an interesting brick building....

Architect: Lyons
"The final embossing design mimics a knot hole, with concentric rings like relief lines on a map, a “thumb mark” in one corner, and a pronounced land around the periphery."
the building creates a grainy timber like/beach house facade out of clay bricks of varying neutral shades. It forms a kind of a mosaic; which i found interesting, it adds a kind of softness to brick.

The brickwork used in the Australasian Steam Navigation Co. building is made up of English brick bonds with a flush mortar joint. The building is low bearing and contains two different types of bricks. A brighter red coloured brick that is stronger is used for the arches over the window openings as well as a decorative element creating horizontal lines across the wall. Different arches have been incorporated into the brickwork including: segmented, circular and semi-circular arches with and without key stones. Due to the severe marine environment and the aging of the building brick edges are chipped and wearing of the mortar has occurred causing some mortar joints in arches to be restored.

Brick bond: English bond
Brick joint: Flush
Arches: Segmental, Semi circle and Circle.

This non-structural external wall part of a police station is made of a stack brick bond with a grooved joint. Together the bond choice and the smooth, glossy finishing create a tiled wall appearance at first glance.

Brick bond: stack
Brick joint: iron bar
Finishing: some type of gloss

The combination of clean red brick, glossed dark windows and the sandstone top half make a great composition.

This newly developed library consists of interesting compositions and clashes of materials.

The use of strong red brick and dark trimming makes a strong image.  The lightly prestruded circular brick image and pediment like relief caught my eye, along with he use of symmetry and sandstone foreground.

The use of layered apartment blocks arch ways and stained windows provided an interesting brick composition.

In this apartment block, the bricks again fulfil a structural role as load-bearing walls, so as to support the roof structure. Dark purple bricks of a standard 110x76x230 have been used structurally, according to a stretcher bond with rake joints. Meanwhile brown plinth external return bricks are used decoratively, where such ornamentation became popular during the Art Deco period.

The bricks have a smooth texture, and are generally of good condition. Alternatively, as the mortar thickness varies between bricks, the skill of the bricklayer was probably not ideal.

This building uses bricks in structural, load-bearing purposes where the immense age of the building is evident through how brick edges are heavily chipped and the sand stock brick in the top right photo has many black dots. That is a sign of the reaction between different components in clay.

The bottom photo features bricks of a sandy colour, which are arranged according to an English bond. Mortar joints are flush to the edge of the brick.

The middle photo is of the outside brick fence and thus features a soldier course, over bricks arranged in a colonial bond. As the joint is flush in arbitrary areas, that was probably the original form of the brickwork although much of it has worn away with time and so now appears to be more like a rake joint.

Bricks used are of a standard 110x76x230 with smooth textures.
