'Brick as Image'- Matthew Argent

This first image shows a set of arches in the Sydney Tafe Marcus Clarke Building. The arches take advantage of the compressive strength of the clay bricks which are playing a very structural role. The surrounding brick surface feature stretcher bonds with raked mortar joints with little variation in colour. This contributes significantly to the monumentality of the building.

This second image shows a very interesting curved corner of the Former Parcels Post Office. I took this image because it is interesting to see how show a linear and solid material can be used to create such smooth curves in the building structure. The bricks feature an English bond with flush mortar joints. With little variation in the brick colour, this provides a relatively smooth finish to the building.
