All of the terracotta bricks are the same in colour.

Yet we perceive there to be colour differences because of the different brick textures and joints.

The darker bands have a rough surface, while the other bands are smooth-faced and reflect more light to appear lighter.

The mortar joints are predominantly flush, however, every 7th course has been raked, which makes the adjacent bricks appears darker when viewed from a distance.

Stretcher bonds used with soldier 'bonds' on the top and bottom courses of the smooth bricks where they meet the rough bricks.
