Sarrah Mae: Brick as Image - all images part2

MEDINA HOTEL,
FORMERLY PARCELS POST OFFICE

Despite the former Parcels Post Office’s mainly red brick facade - smooth and absent of any impurities - there is an overall roughness to the buildings appearance. This is not due to the bead jointing present through out the building, nor the use of English bond, but to the parapet details that wrap the building.

There are no structural brick arches present on the building, with Sandstone beams supporting openings and most brick openings topped with shaded voussoir strings.

WAKE UP! HOTEL
HAYMARKET, FLATIRON BUILDING

Like the Medina building there is a roughness to the overall appearance of the Wake Up! hotel, with the grooves from parapet details adding texture with a high ‘grade‘ to the building. Unlike the Medina building, the hotel is constructed with Flemish bonding and raked jointing.

The building does not seem to have been effected by weathering, but instead wear and tear, with occasional chips suggesting collisions from forces outside of nature.

The presence of tiled segmental arches, which are decorative rather than structural, steel framing, concrete slabs and beams indicate that the bricks on this building are not doing much structural work.

125 OLD SOUTH HEAD ROAD,
BONDI JUNCTION

This art deco apartment block is filled with an array of decorative brickwork, with the obvious use of steel lintels in openings and excessive detailing. Such decoration is only enhanced by the rough texture of the bricks used on the building and the raked joints.

Ignoring the abundant use of parapets, moulded brick and diapers, S
Strecher bond is itself only a minor feature of the block.
