bricks - various types and colour
joints - iron
bonds - english, stretcher
the most interesting feature of this building is the strong element of brick as decoration used, almost extravagantly. One of the major features that interested me was the bold, curvilinear arches. the perfect circle shape appears to be the result of using tapered bricks, with those lined at the centre being bullnosed. Bull nosed bricks are also used as a feature element to highlight windows and the edges of extruded columns. In some areas, particularly vertical edges there is a transition pattern of two bricks of different colours, and this adds a particular decorative element. there are also curved, less defined, flatter arches on top of higher windows. A unique feature is the use of circular bricks, and also curved bricks as seen in the turrets of the top photos
Building B - arch window
very similar to previous building in terms of brickwork and type. The cicular bricks used in this time are more defined and also telling of their non-load bearing nature and simply decorative purpose. However one of thing of particular contrast is the arch in the above window compared to those in the sydney technical college. the inner brickwork of the window has engraved sections that define different layers. there is also a small lined detailed extrusion above the window.
